Students say: "location, location, location"
Date: 18 January 2005LOCATION, location, location is the most important factor when students choose university accommodation.
Whether it's the university they want to be near, or the nightlife, location is key - and more important than price.
This was one of the findings of research carried out by Derwent Living, one of the Midlands' top providers of student accommodation.
In a survey of 1,676 students across Derwent's accommodation schemes in Nottingham, Coventry, Loughborough, Leicester and Derby, students were asked their most important factors when choosing accommodation.
73% of students said location was most important while 71% said it was price that mattered most. Interestingly, what was even more vital was the provision of on site staff with 86% of students saying this was crucial to their university life.
Mark Davies, head of commercial services at Derwent Living, said: "Student accommodation has changed considerably in recent years with standards of accommodation much higher and the expectations of our students have increased.
"Purpose-built developments close to both the city amenities and the university are what students of today look for. They want everything included but with more independence than on-campus accommodation - an independent student community.
"And our study shows that today's students are giving more consideration to where they want to live. It's interesting that location and car parking are high priorities. Students want accommodation which is convenient and uncomplicated."
