£22 million student apartments for city's gun quarter
Date: 23 September 2004A major £22 million development which will provide accommodation for more than 600 university students in Birmingham's Gun Quarter has been announced by housing association Derwent Living.
Demolition work has already begun on the 1.3 acre site in Lower Loveday Street, once occupied by Midlands Electricity Board. The five-storey development of 127 apartments for students at Aston University and the University of Central England is due to be completed by August, 2006.
"This development is a first for Derwent Living in Birmingham and we see it as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Gun Quarter," said Peter Harley, development manager for Derby-based Derwent Living. "It represents our first major expansion outside the East Midlands and we are currently looking at other potential sites in the Gun Quarter."
