Data Protection and you

You may have heard that on 25 May, new data protection laws called the general data protection regulation (GDPR) came into force, which are designed to increase privacy and give people more control about how organisations use their data. We’ve put together the following, which explains what the changes mean for Derwent Living customers.

How will Derwent Living use and store your personal data?

Derwent Living will only collect the personal data it needs to be able to deliver services to its customers.

Personal data is anything that identifies and relates to a living person. This also includes information, that when put together with other data can then identify an individual. You can read more about what is classed as personal data on our privacy page. Derwent Living doesn’t store or use data for any other purpose than it was intended, and the law only allows us to use your information for certain purposes.

We may contact you or send communications to tell you about a service enhancement such as improvements to our online services or to keep you informed on how we are performing. We won’t need your consent to communicate with you this way because we have assessed that it forms part of our agreement with you and it is of mutual interest for us to keep you informed and is relevant to your contract with us.

If you do want to stop receiving certain communications, for example this magazine, you can choose to opt out and view online only by using the account page or emailing You can also opt out of certain customer engagement communications at any point by following the STOP or unsubscribe instructions included in texts and emails.

Opting in

We would also like to occasionally send you information on other products and services we offer, and which we think will be of interest to you.

You must choose to opt in to receive this information, which you can do by using the user account settings page.

How can I object to the personal data that Derwent Living holds? Can it be removed?

You can ask for a copy of the data Derwent Living holds on you. This is done via a subject access request.

You can also ask to change any data you believe Derwent Living holds that is inaccurate and the new law also includes a right to erasure, where in certain circumstances, some or all data we hold about you can be removed at your request.

How can I learn more about my rights and Derwent Living’s approach to GDPR?

Derwent Living has created a new privacy statement on our website which explains in clear terms how all your information is handled, processed and retained and your rights and responsibilities under the new legislation.

It also explains how to get more information and advice from our data protection team. If you have any other questions, please use the general enquires form on our website to get in touch.
