Derwent Living’s in-house mediation team has been shortlisted for the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS), Central Region, Excellence in Tenant Engagement award.
The nationally accredited mediation service has been extremely successful in creating positive outcomes, with more cases than ever being closed. The team is made up of 7 staff and 8 resident mediators, who have trained hard to gain an ‘interpersonal mediation practitioners’ qualification.
Mediation is seen as a positive form of dispute resolution, as it allows for honest and open discussion and identifies what changes can be made to avoid future dispute.
Dauglas Ngwiringwiri, a Derwent Living resident from Bestwood, Nottingham, already works with the elderly and gives back to his community, but wanted to do more. He said: “I love where I live; it’s a nice, peaceful place to be. I want to help people in other areas achieve the same thing.”
Katie Williamson works in Derwent Living’s lettings team and is also a member of the mediation team. She said: “There’s a lot more to it than I first thought; I talk to residents on a daily basis, but it’s over the phone.
“I’m passionate about my job with Derwent so I wanted to do something that would help me get out there and get my teeth into things. Mediation is a great way to do that.
“I’m so proud that we’re making a difference and increasing people’s quality of life. To be nominated for an award is a huge honour and a testament to all the hard work that the mediation team does.”
