Ian Smith, Derwent Living’s resources director, has been nominated in the ‘Finance Director of the year’ category by Derwent Living’s chief executive, Peter McCormack, for the National Housing Association’s National Accountancy Awards (HANAA) this year. The awards ceremony is due to take place on March 17, at the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham.
During his time with Derwent Living, since 1990, Ian has brought the company to a position where they have made sufficient surpluses to continue building new homes, largely without grant funding. 300 such houses were built by them in 2014, in no small part because Ian is exceptionally astute commercially. He has an almost uncanny ability to look at financial data and instantly identify underlying potential problems. The extraordinary efficiency savings Ian has achieved over the years has meant that Derwent Living’s ongoing costs are amongst the lowest in the sector.
By no means a man to take credit for himself, Ian happily shares his knowledge and ability very freely amongst his colleagues. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of Derwent Living’s housing schemes, and is able to use this to guide and inform his colleagues, not just in the finance team, but across the whole business. This often makes him the ‘go to’ person when someone in the Derwent Living offices needs to solve a problem.
