Derwent Living is celebrating success after winning the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) Central Region award for ‘Excellence in Tenant Engagement’.
The organisation received the accolade at an awards ceremony this month (3 March) in recognition of our in-house mediation service.
Derwent Living’s mediation team is made up of seven staff and eight resident mediators, who volunteer their own time to help create positive outcomes for neighbours who find themselves at odds with one another.
The TPAS award recognises housing providers where involvement from residents is truly valued within the organisation, and influences policy and services.
Dauglas Ngwiringwiri, a Derwent Living resident from Bestwood, Nottingham, already works with the elderly and gives back to his community, but wanted to do more. He said: “I love where I live; it’s a nice, peaceful place to be. I want to help people in other areas achieve the same thing.”
Assistant director of housing, Lynn Clayton, said: “Our mediation service is making a big difference to the community. It’s a very effective and straightforward way to resolve disputes between neighbours, particularly common issues such as noise disturbance, and problems with pets or parking disputes. The service is proving so successful that we’ve even begun offering it to other housing associations.
“The hard work and commitment of these volunteers is astounding, and this award is a testament to that. It’s very well-deserved and we couldn’t be more pleased for the whole team.”
The mediation team are now automatically entered into the national finals, which take place in July.
