Work to redevelop a former primary school site in Derbyshire into a much-needed affordable housing scheme is now underway.

Derwent Community Housing Association, a charitable subsidiary of housing provider Derwent Living, is working in partnership with leading house builder Westleigh to deliver 42 properties on the site of the former Shirland Primary School.

Funding to build the scheme was secured by Derwent Community Housing Association and supported by a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.

The development will offer a range of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties – 36 for affordable rent and six allocated for shared ownership, which are expected to be available for handover to residents from January 2016.

Development director at Derwent Living, Samantha Veal, who is overseeing the development said: “The area is very much in need of affordable housing. The scheme has been well received by local people as it will not only provide all-important housing for the area, but will transform the old school site which had become overgrown and unattractive.

“There is a real need to provide a wider variety of properties in the area, so we are very pleased to be working to deliver a range of flats, bungalows and houses to help address that demand locally.

“We are certain that they will prove very popular when they are ready for residents to move in early next year.”

Gary Turner, head of partnerships and investments at Westleigh, added: “We’re very proud to be working with Derwent Community Housing Association to revive a derelict area by transforming it into a high quality affordable housing development for the benefit of the local community.”
