Derwent Living customer Russell (Russ) Slaney has been shortlisted in the Tenant Champion category of this year’s 24 Housing Awards for his commitment to improving services and championing engagement. Russ, a former prison worker, has been involved with Derwent Living since 2014 serving on both the mediation and resident scrutiny teams.
Russ has handled numerous mediation cases in that time and helped support other customers to get involved in delivering the service. Taking his involvement work that step further, Russ joined the resident scrutiny team in 2016 where he’s become a key member - contributing to reviews which improve services for all customers. He regularly represents Derwent Living, presenting on customer mediation and scrutiny. In July Russ chaired a best practice workshop at a national scrutiny seminar.
Over the past 12 months Russ has been studying for his Level 3 British Sign Language qualification. Once qualified, Russ is keen to work with the engagement team at Derwent Living to increase involvement opportunities for residents with impairments.
On hearing of his nomination and shortlist Russ said: “What can I say? I’m gobsmacked to be shortlisted. I don’t do it for recognition, I do it because I love it and I’ll keep on doing it for as long as I can.”
Mitch Allseybrook, customer engagement manager commented: “It’s great that Russ has made the shortlist for tenant champion. He’s been a fantastic ambassador for Derwent Living and has worked tirelessly to improve the service for customers. His commitment and passion for the voluntary work he does is very clear, and his enthusiasm to learn new skills and draw on his own personal experience for the benefit of others is humbling.
“We wish him the very best of luck and will be there to cheer him on at the awards ceremony in October.”
The winners will be announced at a ceremony at The Ricoh Arena, Coventry on Thursday 10 October. You can see how Russ gets on at the awards on Twitter.
